Malvern Collegiate Institute has received an outpouring of donations to repair the vandalized statue that stands in front of the east-end high school.
Just days before Remembrance Day, the monument of a First World War soldier was wrapped in blue duct tape and three letters were stolen.
“As the result of the incident much good has come to our community and to our school,” Lina Pinard, the principal at Malvern told CityNews.
The school has received $10,000 in donations with the promises of more to come.
Donations will go to repair the missing letters of the names of the soldiers and installing security cameras and lights. The base of the monument will be secured so that no one can climb it.
Cathy Forrestall, a former graduate from Malvern, and her niece presented a $4,000 cheque in front of the monument on Wednesday, on behalf of her relatives who have attended the school going back four generations.
“I just thought that this was the right thing to do and I’m please that it is going to such a great cause,” she said.
Vandra Masemann, chair of the Malvern Collegiate War Memorial Restoration Committee, said that donations didn’t only come from Malvernites.
“One person who saw it [reports about the incident] on an Air Canada flight from Vancouver called us as soon as he got home,” she said.
The Toronto District School Board has also contributed money for security and lighting.
