Ford vows to abolish 5-cent plastic bag fee in 2012

Mayor Rob Ford laid out some of his key goals for 2012 on Thursday, including abolishing the 5-cent plastic bag tax.

“I want to get rid of it,” Ford told CityNews reporter Andrew Krystal. “I’m going to bring it forward probably in the spring or summer.  I want to abolish the 5-cent bag tax.”

“It’s literally nickling [sic] and diming people, and people are fed up,” he argued. “When I go to the store I always hear complaints of people in line and people come up to me saying, ‘Rob when are you going to get rid of that 5-cent bag tax?'”

Despite the city’s current budget woes, Ford also vowed to scrap a significant source of revenue.

“We’re going to eliminate the land transfer tax before my term is over,” he said.

And while his critics and detractors accuse him of an overzealous paring down of city services, Ford maintains he is acting on behalf of taxpayers.

“Everything we said we’re going to do, we’ve done…The people of the city want us to be responsible with their money and that’s exactly what we said we’re going to do.”

“I listen to the taxpayers. They are the boss.”
