Singer Neko Case praises high school students’ cover song

This will break your heart.

At least, that’s what happened to honorary Canadian singer Neko Case.

Case heard Kate Macdonald and Janelle Blanchard, two Peterborough high school students, covering her song “Star Witness” and tweeted, “Wow. That just made me bawl my eyes out. What beautiful singers. I’m not worthy….Holy god. They broke the s**t out of my heart!!”

And when you listen to this haunting rendition, recorded in the stairwell of The Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School, I am sure you’ll agree. The heart. It swoons.

But there is message behind this recording. In September, the local school board voted to close the school, one that hosts a much-loved arts-intensive program that draws kids from all around.

It is also the only school in downtown Peterborough, described by locals as vital to the life of the community.  The video already has 24k views as of Wednesday. Go watch it – it will remind you of how important – and occasionally transcendent – an arts education can be.
