Some Ontario post-secondary students eligible for tuition rebates

TORONTO, Ont. – It’s a belated Christmas present for post-secondary students in Ontario, after the Liberal government promised the majority of those in college and university will be eligible for 30 per cent tuition rebates starting Thursday.
Announced last week, colleges and universities minister Glen Murray announced rebates of $365 to each college student and $800 to each university student,.
However, the rebates only apply to those students from families whose net income is under $160,000 annually, a stipulation which has the Canadian Federation of Students petitioning against, saying it only covers a third of Ontario’s student population.
Those already receiving student loans will automatically be enrolled in the program. Others will have to apply online.
The application for permanent grants worth up to $1,600, meanwhile, will begin in September.
Murray said all eligible students will have the rebates in time to pay for the second installment of their tuition fees.
