Schneider to start in Boston, Luongo sits

Cory Schneider — not Roberto Luongo -– will get the start in goal for the Vancouver Canucks’ Stanley Cup Finals rematch versus the Bruins in Boston on Saturday.

Alain Vigneault, head coach of the Canucks, made the announcement on Friday but refused to get into specifics as to what led to his decision, reports Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy.

Both Schneider and Luongo said that it was to give Schneider his first start in his hometown.

But the decision not to start Luongo has raided eyebrows.

“VAN won’t expose Luongo to his BOS house of horrors tomorrow,” tweeted reporter Damian Cox.

The Bruins outscored Vancouver 17-3 in last spring’s three Boston-held games of the Finals, which the Bruins rallied to win in seven games. And Luongo was chased from the net in both games 2 and 3 after being shelled 8-1 in Beantown.

Luongo posted a 28-save shutout in the Canucks’ most recent game, Wednesday versus the Minnesota Wild, and has a 17-8-3 record this season with 2.38 goals-against average.

Schneider, a native of Marbelhead, Michigan, who spent three years with the Boston College Eagles, carries a record of 8-5-0 with a 2.15 goals-against average this season.
