West-end homes evacuated due to fire

Fire forced residents of a west-end neighbourhood from their homes early Sunday morning.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. on Rusholme Road, near Dundas and Dufferin streets.

Smoke was reportedly seen coming from the basement, where the fire may have started.

Crews asked neighbours to leave their homes as a precaution.

Around the same time, firefighters in Scarborough put out a blaze at a strip mall.

The fire apparently started on the roof of a plaza on Nugget Avenue, near McCowan Road and Sheppard Avenue East.

There were no injuries in either fire, and officials are still investigating how they started.
