Toronto’s first baby of 2012 dies: reports

Toronto’s first baby of 2012 has died, according to reports.

Ming Shui Lei was born at Scarborough General Hospital 40 seconds after midnight on New Year’s Day.  He was pronounced dead in hospital Thursday.

The Toronto Star reports that Li Zhang and Yichuan Lei were scheduled to bring their son in for a checkup on Jan. 4, two days after Zhang was discharged.

The family did not attend, so the hospital scheduled a second visit for Jan. 5. The family missed that appointment as well, but showed up the hospital later that night.

Lei could not be revived.

Zhang and Lei have two older children, both of whom were born in China. The family immigrated to Canada less than a year ago.
