Female hit by TTC streetcar at Yonge & St. Clair

A 19-year-old female pedestrian was injured after being struck by a streetcar at Yonge and St. Clair on Wednesday afternoon.

Police and emergency crews had to jack up the vehicle to free her. She was in serious but stable condition and taken to a hospital. Police say she suffered a broken pelvis.

The incident occurred shortly after noon when the girl’s mother dropped her off and watched in horror as she was struck while trying to cross the street. The mother was treated for shock.

Police credit the streetcar driver, who quickly slammed on the brakes, with saving her life.

“I think it was the quick action of the streetcar driver that definitely saved her in this incident,” Sgt. Paul Bainard.

“There’s large spaces between blocks so people tend to cross mid-block. It’s a dangerous practice.”
