Some customers object to increasing tip standard to 20 per cent

For years, 15 per cent has been considered the standard tipping rate at restaurants however, some restaurants are prompting customers with a suggested 20 per cent gratuity, according to an article in The Toronto Star.

The idea of being prompted to pay the larger tip is not going over well with a lot of people.

One person told 680News the idea rubs him the wrong way.

“If I get good service sometimes I’ll tip more than 20 per cent but if I get bad service I shouldn’t have to tip 20 per cent,” he explained.

Another person said that she did not think the change was positive, especially with the recent hard economic times.

“That’s kind of inconvenient now, at this time of all times, to ask for that.”

However, one woman who works as a server, told 680News the tough economy goes both ways.

“You can be a polite person, and you can be great to serve and you’re not tipping enough. I don’t mean to be harsh but your smile isn’t going to pay my bills.”

Ron Reaman of the Canadian Restaurant and Food Association told 680News it is important to note that it is only a suggestion.

“I think we just need to make sure that everybody understands, this is a discretionary decision. What we’re doing is trying to make it just a little bit easier for the customers.”

Reaman added that the tip per cent can be changed by the customer at any time.
