Woman missing after Caledon fire

Friends of a Caledon woman are fearing the worst after a fire in her home Sunday.

The fire began on Calmon Drive near Victoria Crescent around 8:40 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police said. The house was completely destroyed.

OPP say the woman was believed to be home at the time, but it still unaccounted for. Her car was in the gargge.

“I said to [my husband], I’m going to have to go down and see Linda. Sadly, that didn’t happen,” Carla Smales told CityNews, her voice breaking.

Smales said she often visited her elderly neighbour for tea, and brought her food when the power was out.

“She would have been in there. She wouldn’t go anywhere. She stayed in that house by herself and it was immaculate, always.”

There were several major fires in the GTA this weekend, including one in Georgetown that killed an elderly man.

In York Region, police are investigating after a fire damaged a home on Farr Avenue, near Leslie Street and Mt. Albert Road, on Sunday.

Police said the home was fully engulfed in flames around 3:45 p.m.

No one was injured, but neighbours were asked to leave their homes as a precaution.

In Toronto, fire fighters were called to a fire on Nightingale Place, near Lawrence Avenue and Scarborough Golf Club Road, around 4:15 p.m.

They also had to deal with a basement fire on Oakwood Avenue, between Rogers Road and St. Clair Avenue.

No injuries were reported in those fires.
