Clothing drop boxes could be banned in Toronto

The clothing drop boxes that dot strip mall parking lots across Toronto could soon disappear.
The Licencing and Standards Committee is considering banning the multi-million dollar industry.
Councillor Mike Del Grande won’t shed any tears if the boxes vanish.
“I’ve had a running war with these boxes. I hate them,” he said.
Former councillor Howard Moscoe started the push to clean them up in 2006. He calls it the worst bylaw ever written in this city.
“The truth of the matter is, I only know of two organizations that are charities that actually operate boxes,” Moscoe explained. “Most of them are scammers and they use charities to hide behind so they get people’s goodwill.”
Municipal licencing staff have been told to put together a report by September 21 on how to strengthen the bylaw that includes an all out ban or licencing them.
