VANCOUVER — Decades after women started to go missing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the RCMP has apologized for not doing more to find the killer.
Assistant Commissioner Craig Callens says he would like to express to victims’ family members how very sorry he is for their loss.
He says they look forward to getting meaningful information that they will get at the public inquiry looking into the Robert Pickton investigation.
Callens says the RCMP’s investigation practices have improved since 1998.
In 2010, then deputy commissioner Gary Bass issued a statement of regret in connection to the investigation.
But after the first RCMP witness recently appeared before the public inquiry, Callens says it became obvious that an apology should be issued now, as opposed to at the end of the inquiry.
