ORNGE fires founder and chief operating officer

TORONTO, Ont. – Two top officials have been formally removed from their positions at Ontario’s air ambulance service.

ORNGE has fired its founder Dr. Chris Mazza, as well as chief operating officer Maria Renzella.

A statement released by the company says no severance payments were offered to Renzella and Mazza, who was paid more by Ontario taxpayers than any other public sector worker last year.

Mazza went on indefinite medical leave in December shortly after his $1.4-million salary was made public.

The news comes as ORNGE Global, the for-profit entity Mazza created, was placed into bankruptcy.

A spokesperson for ORNGE said the bankruptcy will not affect the rescue services operation and the move was needed to restore confidence in the air ambulance service.

ORNGE has been the centre of controversy for months over its questionable business practices.
