Canada Post removes more than 1,000 letter-boxes across the country

TORONTO, Ont. – Having trouble mailing a letter lately? If so, it might have something to do with the number of Canada Post mailboxes around.
The postal service says it removed more than 1,000 letter-boxes across the country over the last few years as household mail has dropped off more than 17 per cent.
Delise told 680News, she has noticed the red letter-boxes are getting harder to find.
“I have, the few times that I have needed to use snail mail I have trouble finding a box,” she said.
The trend of removing boxes is expected to continue, as more people go online to pay their bills.
Akshay isn’t there just yet, saying he still uses “snail mail.”
“We do it regularly and it’s going to be an inconvenience for us, but the government knows best,” he said.
Meanwhile, one man told 680News the move is already overdue.
“At least five, six, seven years ago – everything is done online these days, don’t use the red boxes at all,” he said.
The C.D. Howe Institute says Canada Post is not doing enough if it wants to survive once letter mail becomes obsolete. It says the crown corporation should be privatized.
