Group of Toronto students may be forced to change schools

A group of Toronto elementary school children may be forced to change schools come September.

The Toronto District School Board has recommended new boundaries for students currently attending McKee Public School, in the Yonge and Finch area.

The board says the area is experiencing a population boom and the school simply can’t keep up. Enrolment at McKee Public School is expected to climb to nearly 800 students by September. Capacity is meant for just 664.

“It is a terrible pain to me and certainly not something I would have wanted to see happen,” said Mari Rutka, Ward 12 Trustee.

“This is the best we can do, given the circumstances.”

Under the proposed new guidelines, families who live north of Annapearl Court would have to send their kids to nearby Finch Public School.

The move would only apply to students in kindergarten to grade three. As many as 155 students could be impacted.

Officials say the school sits on a small piece of land and therefore the board doesn’t have the option of adding portables or building an addition to accommodate more students.

The proposed change isn’t sitting well with parents and students.

“My friends are here and I play with them,” said one student.

“The children who are already at the school should stay at the school,” said parent Anu Ray.

The TDSB is expected to vote on the motion Wednesday.
