Head of RIDE program suspended for alleged intoxication

Toronto police say the head of their traffic services division and R.I.D.E. program has been suspended for alleged intoxication.

The chairman of the Police Services Board says Earl Witty was driven home from work on Friday after acting strangely on the job.

He says coworkers saw signs that Witty may have been drunk.

The police professional standards unit is investigating the situation and will look into how he got to work in the first place.

It will also investigate whether Witty was on any medication that could have affected his behaviour.

Witty is a 38-year veteran of the force who heads up the Traffic Services department and helps organize the R.I.D.E. program which is aimed at getting drunk drivers off the road.
