LONDON, England — Canadian divers Alexandre Despatie and Reuben Ross will advance to the synchronized 3m springboard final after finishing second in preliminaries at the FINA Diving World Cup on Monday.
Competing at the Aquatics Centre, the venue for swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and modern pentathlon at this summer’s London 2012 Olympic Games, the Canadian duo is working to gain an Olympic berth in the event. The top-eight finishers in tonight’s final should qualify.
Despatie, a two-time Olympic silver medallist from Laval, Que, has been away from competition for almost a year with a knee injury. He described a recent seventh-place finish with Ross at a Grand Prix competition in Germany as a “disaster.”
Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion will also be in action on Monday, competing in the women’s individual 10m platform competition. Canada has already qualified the maximum number of Olympic berths in the event, so the divers will be using the event to grow more familiar with the Olympic venue.
