Ford brothers not backing down on subway dreams

Toronto, Ont. – Ontario transportation minister Bob Chiarrelli spoke out on Toronto’s transit issues Friday.

He told the Toronto Board of Trade that the province has to follow council’s lead when it comes to transit plans.

However, Mayor Rob Ford hopes the province will ignore city council’s vote in favour of light rail but the transportation minister said he will respect council’s decision.

“(Mayors) do not have the power, no mayor in Ottawa or Kitchener or Toronto can do things on their own,” Bob Chiarelli explained. “They need endorsement from council.”

We’re not going to back down when we know 80 per cent of the people want subways in this city,” Councillor Doug Ford said. “We listen to the people.”

Chiarelli said the province doesn’t have a say in what type of transit is built in municipalities, that’s a decision of local councils.
