Hamilton huge as Ice Dogs rout Frontenacs

Missing a significant amount of action hasn’t phased Dougie Hamilton’s production.
The 18-year-old defenceman had two goals and two assists as the Niagara IceDogs defeated the visiting Kingston Frontenacs 9-3 on Sunday afternoon in Ontario Hockey League action.
Since returning on February 12th from a 10-game suspension, which was handed out for an illegal hit to the head of Sudbury Wolves’ forward Michael MacDonald, Hamilton has registered at least one point in all seven games he’s played and has four goals and 13 points in the process.
Despite playing only 41 games this season, the Boston Bruins first-round draft pick from 2011 leads OHL defenceman in goals with 17 and points with 63.
Alex Friesen and Joel Wigle scored two goals apiece for the IceDogs (39-17-3), who regained sole possession of top spot in the Eastern Conference, Freddie Hamilton and Brett Ritchie each had a goal and an assist while Ryan Strome had a single goal.
Andrew Agozzino chipped in with four assists.
Jacob Smith and Ryan Kujawinksi each had a goal and an assist for the Frontenacs (19-35-6), who sit last in the Eastern Conference, as Petr Beranek scored a single goal.
Christopher Festarini stopped 24 shots for the win while Igor Bobkov allowed four goals on nine shots before getting pulled less than six minutes into the game.
Jacob Riley stopped 40-of-45 shots in relief.
Niagara’s top-ranked power play went 1 for 2 as Kingston scored once on three opportunities with the man advantage.
Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Brampton 3, Sault Ste. Marie 1; Guelph 6, Kitchener 3; Mississauga 6, Erie 0; London 5, Ottawa 2; Peterborough 4, Belleville 3; and Windsor 8, Sudbury 6.
At St. Catharines, Ont., Friesen opened the scoring 1:26 into the game but Smith tied it 33 seconds later.
The IceDogs then scored five goals in five minutes.
Friesen scored his second of the period at 3:49, Dougie Hamilton scored at 4:16, Wigle scored at 5:45, Strome at 8:15 and finally Dougie Hamilton added his second goal of the period at 8:49.
Kujawinski scored a power-play goal at 18:54 to make it 6-2 Niagara after 20 minutes of play.
Freddie Hamilton scored with the man advantage 5:02 into the second period and Wigle added his second goal of the game at 11:27.
Beranek put another goal on the board for the Frontenacs at 17:41 but Ritchie scored shorthanded with nine seconds remaining in the period to make it 9-3 after 40 minutes of play.
Niagara outshot Kingston 14-5 in the third period but neither club registered another goal.

At Guelph, Ont., Scott Kosmachuk scored twice and Francis Menard and Hunter Garlent had a goal and two assists each as the Storm (25-28-5) doubled up Kitchener (38-19-2) to move into the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

At Mississauga, Ont., Brandon Maxwell stopped all 37 shots he faced and Andrew Goldberg scored twice as the Majors (28-25-7) blanked Erie (9-45-5) for their fourth win in a row.

At Ottawa, Michael Houser stopped 37 shots, earning the game’s first star, and Greg McKegg had a goal and an assist as London (44-14-1) defeated the 67’s (36-16-7), who lost for the first time in regulation in four outings.

At Peterborough, Ont., Alan Quine scored the game winner late in the third period and Andrew Yogan added two more goals as the Petes (26-28-7) moved into a tie with Belleville (29-29-1) for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

At Windsor, Ont., Alexander Khokhlachev scored two goals and set up three more and five other Spitfires’ players recorded a multi-point game as Windsor (26-28-6) beat Sudbury (31-23-5).
