Taxi drivers to rally against ‘two-tier’ system

Taxi drivers will rally at city hall Monday against what they’re calling a two-tier system.

Organizers of the Day of Action for Taxi Drivers say the city hasn’t, as promised, changed the rules that treat Ambassador cabs differently.

“Drivers are fed up with delays,” the iTaxiworkers Association said in a release.

“[They] are calling for … the city to make good on its promise to reform the taxi industry and implement a single, equal and fair taxi plate for all owners, and end the two-tier discrimination of the Ambassador system.”

The group says the city bylaw that bans Ambassador plate owners from hiring replacement drivers meant stabbing victim Khalil Talke couldn’t earn income while recovering in hospital.

Talke was attacked on Feb. 14, 2011 by a customer who remains at large.
