Liberals apologize for “Vikileaks” scandal

OTTAWA, Ont. – Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae has apologized to Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, after a party staffer was found responsible for a ”Vikileaks” Twitter account which exposed private details surrounding the minister’s messy divorce.
The Liberal staffer found at fault has been identified as Adam Carroll, a researcher who had been with the party for a number of years. He began attacking Toews after becoming upset with him for saying opponents to a Conservative online surveillance bill support child pornography.
Rae spoke with Carroll on Monday, who in turn, quickly stepped down from his post.
“The week before, he was very upset by the child pornographer remarks that had been made before, but we all agreed that that was no excuse,” Rae told reporters. “Nastiness begets other forms of nastiness. At some point you have to stop.”
Toews, meanwhile, accepted Rae’s apology, but said the speaker needs to continue to investigate actions of members of the Liberals.
“[There] were members of the Liberal party who actively encouraged the use of the Vikileaks 30 website,” Toews said. “I think the evidence is clear on the public record that there were at least one member who advocated on a continuous basis the use of that.”
The Conservatives originally blamed the NDP for the account, but have since withdrawn those accusations.
