Partial building collapse at University and College

TORONTO, Ont. – Building inspectors are at the scene of a construction collapse at University Avenue and College Street, Wednesday.
The incident occurred at 700 University Ave., the building that houses Ontario Power Generation, shortly after 10:30 a.m.
Drywall from the building fell 10 metres. The first storey is raised on pillars, and the section of roof that fell was supported by those pillars.
Ted Gruetzner with the Ontario Power Generation told CityNews Channel the damage looks worse than it actually is.
“It does look spectacular but it’s not a sign that the building is in any danger or anything like that,” he explained.
“It’s not part of the concrete structure. It’s a drywall undercovering on the awning system so there’s no risk to the building itself.”
The sidewalk below the overhang had been blocked off just hours before the collapse because a crack was spotted in the drywall.
No one was injured in the collapse.
Reports said the collapse may have been caused by the wind. Engineers are now on scene, inspecting the building.
