Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Smyth could receive a phone call from the National Hockey League’s disciplinary czar, Brendan Shanahan, to discuss his from-behind hit on St. Louis Blues defenceman Roman Polak during the Oilers’ 5-2 loss to the Blues on Wednesday night in Edmonton.
Despite showing immediate concern for Polak’s health after the illegal hit, which occurred at 13:24 of the second period, Smyth was handed a major penalty for checking from behind plus a game misconduct.
The Oilers were able to kill Smyth’s five-minute penalty without allowing a shot.
Polak was slow to get up after the infraction but skated to the bench on his own power. He sat out the rest of the second period but returned in the third.
No word yet whether Shanahan will be reviewing Smyth’s hit.
