Yzerman back as Team Canada Executive Director

Steve Yzerman couldn’t resist the offer to represent Canada again.
The Tampa Lightning GM was named the Executive Director for the Canadian men’s hockey team for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia on Monday afternoon.
The former Detroit Red Wings legend will have Doug Armstrong, Kevin Lowe and Ken Holland on his management team. Hockey Canada president and CEO Bob Nicholson made the announcement during a press conference in Calgary.
It’s the same management team that put together the Canadian squad that won the gold medal at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver — a victory that was punctuated by a 3-2 overtime win over the U.S. It was the first Olympic gold medal won by a host team since the Americans won in Lake Placid, New York in 1980.
The 46-year-old Yzerman has represented Canada on several occasions during his extensive career in hockey. Yzerman was a member of the gold-medal-winning Canada team at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 and was the general manager for the Team Canada squad that won the IIHF World Championship in 2007.
The NHL has yet to determine whether NHL players will be available to play at the Sochi Olympics. It will be a major point of emphasis when the NHL and NHLPA are expected to resume their Collective Bargaining negotiations after the 2011-12 season.
