More discussion expected on back-to-work bill for Air Canada

OTTAWA, ON (NEWS1130) – The Harper government is set to talk more about its decision to introduce back-to-work legislation in the Air Canada labour disputes.
The airline’s largest union had been set to walk off the job this morning, while its pilots were going to be locked-out by the company at the same time. The government stepped in by referring the two cases to the Industrial Relations Board, temporarily blocking any job action.
To avoid a work stoppage during Spring Break, the government will table the bill early this week in hopes of passing it as soon as possible.
The opposition isn’t happy with the legislation, saying it tramples the rights of workers during negotiations. The NDP won’t say if it will try and delay the it in the House of Commons.
Meanwhile, a few dozen Air Canada workers are blowing whistles and horns in a noisy demonstration outside Montreal’s Trudeau airport.
They’re rallying against the government’s decision to prevent them from going on strike, but say they have no plan to disrupt operations and upset air travelers.
