One dead in Mississauga fire

One person is dead following a fire at a Mississauga retirement condo.

The two-alarm blaze occurred inside a high rise retirement condo building on Inverhouse Drive near Lakeshore,  just after 12:30 p.m, Tuesday.

When firefighters arrived on scene they were met with a wall of black smoke coming from a unit on the third floor.

An elderly woman was found in the unit without vital signs.

“It looks like she was suffering from severe smoke inhalation and she had burns to her hands and face,” Platoon Chief Allen Hill told 680News.

The woman was taken to hospital where she later died.

There has been no word on the cause of the blaze but officials say it does not appear to have started in the kitchen.

Neighbours say the woman, believed to be in her 90s, was a heavy smoker.

The Fire Marshall’s office has been called in to investigate.
