Report: Sean Avery announces retirement

Infamous NHL bad boy Sean Avery has apparently announced his retirement from hockey.
During a segment of the Bravo TV show Watch What Happens Live on Monday, Avery told the host, “I am officially retired. I threw my skates in the Hudson.”
It’s not clear at the moment if Avery was telling the truth or simply joking around on the show, but if this does spell the end for Avery, he doesn’t leave the game on a high note.
Avery spent some time this season with the New York Rangers, but the team placed him on waivers twice, sending him to their AHL affiliate Connecticut Whale on two separate occasions.
On March 7, the Rangers organization cut ties with 31-year-old completely, announcing that he would not be included on the Whale postseason roster. Avery hasn’t suited up for a game since Jan. 27.
Avery signed with the Detroit Red Wings as an undrafted free agent in 1999 and began his NHL career with the Wings in 2001 and went on to play for the Los Angeles Kings, Dallas Stars and Rangers. In 580 career games, Avery recorded 90 goals, 247 points and 1,533 penalty minutes.
In his 15 games with the Rangers this season, Avery had three goals, no assists and 21 penalty minutes.
The outspoken winger is in the final year of a four-year, $15.5 million contract.
Update: Sportsnet’s Mark Spector asked Avery’s agent, Pat Morris, if his client has, or plans on filing retirement papers with NHLPA. Morris replied: “No.”
