Caps’ Orlov blows shootout attempt: watch

Washington Capitals defenceman Dmitry Orlov’s first career shootout attempt could well be his last career shootout attempt.

Perhaps nerves got to the rookie, as the shootout versus the New York Islanders was all tied up, and the game was essentially a must-win (aren’t they all these days?) for Washington as the team is in the thick of a three-way battle with the Winnipeg Jets and Florida Panthers (who also won on Tuesday night) for the Southeast Division crown.

Shootout notwithstanding, Orlov, a graduate of Russia’s KHL, has enjoyed a solid freshman year after being called up from the American Hockey League’s Hersey Bears.

He has three goals, 14 assists, and is a plus-3 in his 51 games with the big club.<br.

Orlov was likely tapped for the shootout because he was having a good night. He scored at 1:51of the third period as the Capitals mounted a comeback.

His hot hands went frigid on this free breakaway, though.
