Luminato 2012 includes K’naan, Rufus Wainwright

The lineup for the sixth-annual Luminato festival was unveiled Wednesday, and will include performers K’naan and Rufus Wainwright.
Others who will be featured at the June arts and culture event include the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and art collective Blue Republic.
“Luminato is Toronto’s fifth season when the festival stages the best of our city and invites the world to celebrate and transform it with us,” newly-minted artistic director Jorn Weisbrodt said.
The 10-day arts festival kicks off June 8 and runs until June 17.
Wainwright will be taking part in a tribute to his late mother, Kate McGarrigle, Weisbrodt said Wednesday.
Martha Wainwright and Emmylou Harris will also perform in the Massey Hall concert.
Writer Alice Munro is expected to make a rare appearance and pianist Stewart Goodyear will attempt to play all 32 Beethoven sonatas in a single day.
The festival is centred at David Pecaut Square on King Street West, but events will run across the city.
Luminato was founded by Pecaut and Tony Gagliano and launched in 2007. The American-born Pecaut, who died of cancer in 2009, hoped to rebuild Toronto’s image after SARS, while his counterpart Gagliano wanted the city’s new buildings — the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum — unveiled to the world.
