High school students in Pickering sent home for dress code violation

Students at a Catholic high school in Pickering say they were sent home for not conforming to the school’s dress code – even though it was “dress-down” day.

“My high school sent 350 [students] home today because we wore shorts/ankle socks. Shouldn’t we be focusing in education instead,” Patrick Mott, a student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School, tweeted to CityNews on Thursday.

“Only about 60 students decided to go home,” Durham Catholic District School Board superintendent Tracy Barill told CityNews.ca in a phone interview.

“Student were reminded of the dress code policy [for dress-down day] on Wednesday night, and students who did not comply had the option of changing at school, or going home to change.”

School principal John Mullins released a brief statement saying no students were suspended, and that the uniform policy is outlined in the student agenda.

DurhamRegion.com reported that record-high temperatures were expected on Thursday, which was the same day as a student fundraiser: students were permitted to not wear their uniforms if they made a contribution to a charity.
