St. Joseph’s College janitor charged with attempted murder

Police have charged the head janitor of St. Joseph’s College School with attempted murder after they accused him of cutting a gas line that forced an evacuation at the school on Thursday morning.

No one was injured in the incident that occurred at 7:50 a.m. at 74 Wellesley St. W. in downtown Toronto. A strong gas smell prompted staff to pull the fire alarm and evacuate the building. Emergency services attended and located a break in a gas line.

Police accuse Vincent Perna of entering the building and cutting the gas line and then going to the kitchen and helping the staff there light the stove.

Perna, 67, of Toronto, faces six charges, including attempted murder and attempted arson.

He was also charged with breaking and entering with intent, mischief, mischief endangering life and common nuisance.

He appeared in court Friday morning.
