The head of the U.N. observer mission in Syria will brief the Security Council on Tuesday, and Britain’s U.N. ambassador doesn’t rule out ending the mission early because of escalating violence.
Gen. Robert Mood will brief the council following his suspension of patrols and all other activities by the 300 unarmed observers on Saturday in response to increased violence.
British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant told reporters Monday that council members will want to hear what Mood thinks “the prognosis is for the mission.”
He said many council members will be questioning, by extension, the future of the Kofi Annan peace plan, whose first demand is a complete cessation of violence.
