OPP issues nearly 16,000 charges over Labour Day weekend

Ontario Provincial Police issued nearly 16,000 charges over the Labour Day long weekend for a variety of traffic offences.

Officers issued almost 200 alcohol-related charges. Nearly 11,000 charges were issued for speeding while 340 motorists were ticketed for distracted driving. Almost 1,200 charges for not wearing a seatbelt were issued.

Two people were killed in separate vehicle accidents and two people died in separate water incidents in the OPP’s jurisdiction.

The weekend’s deaths drive the total number of road fatalities within the OPP jurisdiction to 238, a 20 per cent increased compared to the same time in 2011.
