A male student was stabbed in the face on the first day of classes at Cardinal Leger Catholic Secondary School in Brampton, forcing the school into a temporary hold-and-secure mode while police searched for the suspect.
It happened in the school parking lot at 75 Mary St., near Queen and Main streets, just two hours into the new school year.
Two neighbouring schools, St. Mary’s School and McHugh Public School, were also put under a hold-and-secure. They have since been lifted.
Peel police say the victim suffered a non-life threatening wound, and have confirmed he is a student.
The suspect, a 17-year-old, is also believed to be a student. He remains on the loose after fleeing on foot.
“Not a great start to the school year,” said Const. Fiona Thivierge.
Below is a letter the principal issued by Cardinal Leger’s principal following the stabbing.

Dear Parents and Guardians:
Our school was placed in Hold and Secure this morning, as Peel Regional Police investigated an incident that occurred in the school yard, where one of our students received a stab wound. The Hold and Secure was lifted at approximately 12:30 pm. The police investigation is continuing.
This is an unfortunate way to start the school year and it not typical of the safe, caring, healthy and inclusive environment that we strive to foster and maintain.
It is my goal to keep parents and guardians informed of events and activities, both in our school and in the community, that impact us.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
D. Proietti
Principal
