Colleen Shields forced to halt Lake Ontario swim after facing heavy waves and current

After swimming into heavy waves and a strong current, 60-year-old Colleen Shields was forced to halt her attempt to be the oldest person to swim across Lake Ontario.

The long-distance swimmer exited the water approximately 6 miles short of her finish line at Marilyn Bell Park.

Shields was also forced to cancel two attempts earlier this year when faced with bad weather.

She entered the water this morning shortly after 6:00 a.m. in Niagara on the Lake. She was supposed to enter at 1:00 a.m. but her team delayed the swim for five hours because of conditions.

The complete crossing generally takes approximately 18-20 hours.
