Family of boy, 7, killed in 401 crash calls on hit-&-run driver to surrender

An Ajax family has spoken out about the unspeakable pain a hit-and-run crash on Highway 401 has caused. The crash killed seven-year-old Jacoub Favila and the boy’s parents are demanding justice.

“Come out for my son, please,” Jacoub’s father, Jovito Favila, said to the fail-to-remain driver. “We want justice.”

“See what you did to us,” the child’s mother, Bloomy Favila, said through tears the day after the crash.  “See what you did to us.”

The Favila family was travelling on the westbound Highway 401 in Mississauga when their Honda Odyssey minivan was rear ended by a silver Hummer near Dixie Road on New Year’s Day. The driver that hit the van fled the scene. The Hummer was found abandoned on Enterprise Road, not far from the scene of the crash.

“That silver Hummer left the scene, did not stop,” OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford said.

“The driver fled on foot. We don’t know male or female at this time. We are still looking for witnesses.”

Investigators are also scanning security video from the Enterprise Road area for leads.

There were six people in the van at the time — four children and two adults. Jacoub was the only person who suffered injuries in the crash. He was pronounced dead in hospital, leaving behind his parents and siblings, including a twin brother.

Jacoub’s father said the driver of the Hummer has “destroyed our home.”

The parents described their son as a smart boy who loved Lego.

“Please remember Jacoub as our sweet little angel,” the child’s mother said.

A funeral for Jacoub will be held at Highland Funeral Home at 3 p.m. next Wednesday.
