Walmart will be building “at least” 37 new supercentres in Canada as fellow American retailer Target prepares for its Canadian launch.
The supercentres will be completed by Jan. 31, 2014, the company said Tuesday.
“Walmart is not standing still,” 680News senior business editor Mike Eppel said.
“Walmart opened something like 70-plus new stores last year. They’re getting close to 400 locations across the country,” he said.
The grand total investment is $450 million, including investments to the company’s distribution network.
Walmart said the expansion plans would generate more than 7,000 jobs, including in-store positions as well as trade and construction jobs.
Target plans to open between 125 stores in Canada starting in 2013—24 of them in Ontario and four in Toronto alone. Almost all the locations are former Zellers stores.
The location of the new Walmart supercentres has not yet been announced.
