New area codes coming to GTA

The GTA will soon get two new area codes to deal with the massive demand for phone numbers in the area.

Starting March 25, telecommunications companies can start handing out the 437 area code in Toronto alongside 416 and 647 and the 365 area code in the 905-289 region.

“These new area codes reflect the growing use of cell phones and other mobile devices,” Canadian Numbering Administrator director Glenn Pilley said in a statement.

“We expect the first numbers with the new area codes to be assigned over the coming months as part of a seamless transition process.”

Numbers with the current area codes will continue to be assigned for the next few months until there are none left.

Adding an area code can create more than seven million new phone numbers.

Right now, the 416 and 647 area codes are used in Toronto, while the 905 and 289 area codes cover southern Ontario, including Ajax, Pickering, Brampton, Burlington, Hamilton, Markham, Milton, Mississauga, Oakville, Oshawa, Richmond Hill, St. Catharines and Whitby.

The new area codes won’t change the way local and long distance numbers and 911 are dialed.

Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island will also get new area codes this year. Saskatchewan only got its second area code in 2011.
