Videos and online reaction: Meteor explodes over Russia

A meteor that scientists estimate weighed 10 tonnes (11 tons) streaked at supersonic speed over Russia’s Ural Mountains on Friday, setting off blasts that injured some 900 people and frightened countless more.

Michael Garnett, a goalie from Saskatoon who is in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), told CityNews he’d just hit the snooze button on his alarm clock when a meteorite breaking up over Russia shook his building in Chelyabinsk, about 1,500 kilometres east of Moscow.

“About five minutes later just this huge bang, like nothing I’d ever heard before,” he told CityNews via Skype. “I got out of bed and looked up and my light fixtures are swaying and my air vent had blown out of my wall and there was like dust and rocks on my floor.”
