Another winter storm hits the GTA

A sloppy rain-snow mix hit the GTA Tuesday night and the storm is expected to continue through to Wednesday, making for a potentially slippery morning commute.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the area on Tuesday morning as a weather system moved through parts of the United States.

Total snowfall amounts of 15 to 20 centimetres are likely by noon on Wednesday, although amounts near the Lake Ontario shore will be less, Environment Canada said.

The storm will likely be a rain event for much of Toronto, especially the downtown core, where temperatures will be slightly milder than in surrounding areas. Those living north of the Highway 401 as well as residents of Halton, Peel, York and Durham regions will see more snow.

“This system has the potential to cause a significant impact on transportation. The morning and evening commute on Wednesday may be quite slow,” Environment Canada said.

“Driving conditions are expected to deteriorate and may become hazardous due to rapidly accumulating snow on untreated roads and low visibility in heavy snow.”

Airlines have also warned of potential delays due to the storm.

Porter Airlines has issued a travel advisory for Toronto, Chicago and Windsor flights. Customers are being encouraged to check their flight status before leaving for the island airport.

Here’s how Breakfast Television weather specialist Frank Ferragine says the storm will play out:

8 p.m., Tuesday: 2 C, rain-snow mix
1 a.m. – 4 a.m., Wednesday: 1 C, wet snow
6 a.m. – 8 a.m., Wednesday: 3 C, rain-snow mix
9 a.m. – noon, Wednesday: 0 C, snow

“Accumulation totals? It all depends on the temperature, but it could be up to about 10 centimetres tomorrow,” Ferragine said. “Just expect a sloppy mess on the roadways.”
