Subway, roads closed this weekend for TTC work

Getting around the downtown core could be a headache this weekend because of TTC work and the resulting subway and road closures.

The University subway line will be shut down starting Saturday morning to modernize signalling equipment installed when the route opened 50 years ago.

Trains will turn back at St. George and Union stations while crews work on signals, relays and wiring and cabling.

For the next three days, the intersection of Spadina Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard West will also be partly closed for TTC track and electrical work.

The eastbound Gardiner Expressway ramp to Spadina is blocked, as is northbound Spadina at Lake Shore. One lane of traffic on Lake Shore and two southbound lanes on Spadina will remain open.

To serve TTC passengers, shuttle buses will run every three to five minutes between St. George and King stations, but won’t stop at Union because of construction on Front Street.

The TTC will also add more streetcars on the 505 Dundas route between 8 p.m. and 1:45 a.m. and will station Wheel-Trans buses at Bathurst, Eglinton West and Union stations.

The Spadina-Lake Shore intersection will reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday and regular subway service will resume at 6 a.m.

The signal work will continue throughout the month, shutting down the University line on March 10, 17 and 23-24.
