Target opens first Canadian stores in Ontario Tuesday

By The Canadian Press

U.S. discount giant Target is set to open its first stores north of the border on Tuesday.

Target Canada president Tony Fisher made the announcement Monday during a media tour of the retailer’s Guelph store in southwestern Ontario.

The Guelph store and two other Ontario locations in Fergus and Milton are slated to launch Tuesday morning.

The Minneapolis-based retailer is expected to open by the end of the year between 125 and 135 locations in Canada in spaces that were once owned by Zellers.

Fourteen GTA stores including four in Toronto are also slated to open soon, but a spokeswoman wasn’t immediately available to provide exact dates.

The national rollout begins in Ontario before moving onto provinces in the West throughout the year and eventually into Quebec.
