West-end blaze causes $500K in damage

Residents were forced out of their homes after a fire broke out at a two-story row home in the city’s west-end on Sunday night.

The fire began around 7:30 p.m. on Osler Street, in the Davenport and Old Weston roads area.

It quickly escalated to a three-alarm fire, with more than twenty emergency units on scene.

Division commander Bob O’Hallarn told CityNews the flames got into the attic of the home and then spread to the adjacent unit.

“There’s probably damage to more than two homes but there’s two homes that are the worst affected for sure,” he said.

O’Hallarn said it is believed that the fire started in the basement and so far it is not being considered suspicious, however crews need to investigate further.

The Fire Marshall’s office will be notified due to the size of the blaze.

“We probably will be notifying the office of the Fire Marshall just because of the size of the loss, because if there’s damage to several of these houses we’ll probably exceed the threshold for notification,” said O’Hallarn. “It will be up to them to decide if they want to attend or not.”

Residents of the row houses have been evacuated.

One person was transported to hospital with minor smoke inhalation. Damage is estimated at $500,000.
