Fire forces road closures in Innisfil

A large structural fire in Innisfil prompted South Simcoe police to close 2nd Line between 5th and 10th Sideroads Monday afternoon.

Barrie Fire officials told CityNews roofing tar was burning, creating plumes of black toxic smoke which hampered visibility.

Innisfil deputy fire chief Jon Pegg said the structure was fully engulfed when they arrived around 12:20 p.m., and crews took a defensive stance.

The fire has since been extinguished, but Pegg said crews will remain on scene to deal with hot spots.

“Damage is contained to small engines that were on site as well as scrap machinery and vehicles,” Simcoe police said in a release.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but police say it’s not considered suspicious. There are no reported injuries.

The road closures are expected to be lifted around 8 p.m.
