Brampton family grappling with loss of father, daughter

A Brampton family is without a father and a daughter after a two-vehicle crash on Friday night.

Gobinathan Thangavelu, 40, died at the scene of the deadly crash with a Ford F-350 pickup near Highway 50 and Fogal Road, north of Highway 7. His five-year-old daughter Arani died in hospital, and his three-year old daughter Mehala was fighting for her life at SickKids.

The mother, who was driving the family car, remains hospitalized after undergoing eye surgery.

They were on their way back from a shopping trip at Costco when the crash happened within minutes of their home, older son Geerthik Gobinathan, 17, told CityNews.

“I have to take the responsibility to be strong, move forward and take care of my sisters — take care of my family,” he said.

Police are speaking to witnesses, but say it’s too early to determine the cause of the crash or whether charges will be laid against the 27-year-old truck driver.

“Alcohol does not appear right now to be a factor, but we can’t rule that out until the investigation is completed,” said Peel Const. Fiona Thivierge.
