Mayor should hire security, Coun. Doug Ford says after Little Italy incident

TORONTO – Coun. Doug Ford says it is time the mayor hired his own security detail following a weekend incident in which a woman allegedly threw a cup of juice at Mayor Rob Ford at a street festival.

Ford says the mayor is considering personal security but has not committed to hiring anyone.

The mayor’s councillor brother is concerned the incident at Taste of Little Italy Saturday may spur a more serious assault.

He says a security detail would ensure the safety of the mayor as well as the safety of those who work with him and are near him.

“I’m not worried about this scenario, I’m worried about moving forward,” Ford said.

“We were very close to him, too, and I don’t want other people getting hurt.”

Ford says he and the mayor are the subject of several threats.

“Threats have come through our business, they’ve come through our house. I have to ask a question: What have we done so wrong?”

In the past, the mayor has balked at having a security detail but his brother has long insisted he have security.

Ford says it is possible the woman who allegedly tossed the drink at the mayor may have been intoxicated.

Shannon Everett, 27, was arrested and charged with assault for allegedly throwing a drink at the mayor.
