Peterborough family wins $50M Lotto Max jackpot

A Mother’s Day gift turned into a $50-million jackpot for a Peterborough family of six.

Sion Powell, 38, said he bought his mother Linda, 66, some lottery scratch cards for Mother’s Day and with the winnings from them she decided to purchase some Lotto Max tickets.

The family said they were in shock to learn one of the tickets was the sole winner of the $50-million jackpot.

“My wife came home from work around 4 p.m. She’d been to check the tickets and came running home,” John Powell, a 71-year-old contractor, explained. “She said ‘I think we’ve won! I think we’ve won!’ and I said ‘won what?'”

The family said they have been playing the lottery since 2009 and will share the wealth with family.

“We have extended family so we’re going to be a little bit gracious and look after some people – that’s the first thing that comes to mind now,” Sion said.

The family says a few trips will be in their future – one to Wales where John’s family is from and the other to Disneyland.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.  presented the Powells with the cheque at its headquarters in Toronto on Monday afternoon.

This is the third time a Lotto Max jackpot has been won in the GTA this year.

In January Robert Piluso, 39, of Toronto took home a $20-million jackpot and in April a Toronto grandmother did her happy dance over her $40-million win.

The last $50-million Lotto Max win was June 1. That ticket was sold in Quebec.

The OLG said this is the eleventh time since the Lotto Max began that there has been a sole winning ticket.
