There’s no end in sight for Torontonians as construction season is well-underway – Yonge Street is next to be dug up as crews replace watermains.
Beginning August 23, the City of Toronto will begin construction on Yonge Street, from Finch Avenue to Sheppard Avenue.
The project is expected to be completed by May 2014 with crews working from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.
Work at intersections with traffic signals and on most water service connections will be completed overnight betwen 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Various sections of the southbound curb lane will be closed for the duration of the project. A second southbound lane will also be closed to accommodate the work zone during the hours of construction.
Phase 1 of the construction begins on Aug. 23 and is expected to wrap up early December. During this phase, the southbound curb lane on Yonge Street between Finch Avenue and Kingsdale Avenue will be closed.
Phase 2 will begin Oct. 1 and is expected to finish in March 2014 with road restoration work continuing into May 2014. During this time Yonge Street from Kingsdale to Sheppard Avenue will be closed.
This will leave one lane open for southbound traffic at all times and two lanes open for southbound traffic at night and during morning rush hour.
In an attemot to east traffic congestion during this project, traffic signals will be adjusted and left advance signals are being installed at some locations.
The City of Toronto recommends commuters use alternate routes such as Bathurst Street, Senlac Road, Beecroft Road, Willowdale Avenue and Bayview Avenue.
Full details on the project and maps are available on the City’s website.
A community update meeting to explain the timing, phasing and impacts of the project will be held on Tuesday Sept. 3 begining at 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the North York Civic Centre.
