Funeral held for little boy killed in Cuba

A tiny white casket was carried out of a chapel on Dufferin Street near St.Clair Avenue as little Cameron Davis was finally laid to rest.

The sombre service almost happened without the three-year-old boy’s mother.

Justine Davis had been held in Cuba since she and her son were involved in a scooter crash on Dec. 23, 2013.

Cameron was killed in the crash and authorities were keeping Davis until the investigation was complete.

After the service family members thanked the media for their assistance in bringing public attention to Davis’ situation, which they say helped put pressure on authorities to fast track the investigation, granting her release and allowing her to attend the service.

“Every mother should have that right,” Ambery Hussey, a close friend of the family, told CityNews. “They are the ones suffering through something traumatic. It’s the first step in getting past that and grieving and healing.”

An online petition to put pressure on the Cuban government to bring Davis home also garnered over 40,000 signatures.

“It was really, really something amazing to have all the love and support that we have in this trying time,” Cameron’s father Micharl Sifontes told the media. “You guys did something that even the embassy could do and it’s sad but it just shows the power of social media and the media in general.”

The crash happened more than six weeks ago near a Cayo Largo resort. Davis told CityNews they were offered the scooter after returning a rental jeep early.

Both were wearing helmets at the time and Davis said everything seemed perfectly safe, with Cameron seated in front of her.

Just minutes into their ride they collided with an industrial sized truck on an unpaved patch of a two-lane road. Both were thrown from the scooter.

Davis has now been cleared in the investigation and will never have to return to Cuba.
