‘Poutine on demand’ offered by Toronto ridesharing service

It may sound a bit cheesy, but Uber Toronto will be celebrating the ongoing NXNE festival by offering their users a “uniquely Canadian” on-demand service.

The ride-sharing company will be offering poutine, on demand, from Friday at noon until 3 a.m. on Saturday.

Ian Black, general manager of Uber Toronto, says his team was looking for a fun way to help celebrate national pride while providing a service that is closely related to what they do.

“We think of ourselves as an on demand service (and) what we wanted to do was put together an experience that was uniquely Canadian,” Black said. “With NXNE going on and with Canada Day on the doorstep, we wanted to have a very Canadian experience.

“We got together in the office and it wasn’t long before we realized that poutine was the perfect on-demand Canadian experience to bring to Toronto.”

For $20, users of the Uber app can get two orders of traditional poutine from Poutini’s. Fresh, hand-cut french fries, topped with cheese curds and traditional gravy will be delivered to any location in downtown Toronto.

“People associate poutine with smaller, crowded places; always having to go out for it,” Black said. “We thought we’d really make it easy and fun for people to enjoy wherever they are.

“I admit, it’s a little bit crazy and it’s not something we’d want to do everyday, but for a one-day experience we thought …people would really get a kick out of ordering poutine on-demand.”

While Uber will not be offering rides with poutine all ready for a potential hungry traveller, they will have couriers going all over the downtown to feed their hungry patrons. Black advises that Uber and Poutini’s are anticipating high demand for the tasty treat over the 15 hours they will offer it.

“Just open the app and you’ll be able to order poutine at the touch of a button,” Black said. “We know demand is going to be really high, so we encourage users that if it’s not available the first time, to open up the app later on and try again.

“Hopefully it will be an experience everyone will enjoy.”
